Why PE100 for Sarawak Infrastructure

Sarawak's infrastructure development under RECODA's regional growth initiatives and the state government's rolling capital works programme has created consistent demand for large-diameter pressure pipe across water supply, sewerage, gas distribution and industrial applications. PE100 has become the material of choice for buried and above-ground pipelines across all of these sectors.

HDPE pipe manufactured to PE100 compound grade offers a minimum required strength (MRS) of 10 MPa, which translates to a significantly longer design service life than earlier PE80 formulations. At a standard design factor of 1.25 against the MRS, PN10 pipe is rated for sustained working pressures of 10 bar, and PN16 for 16 bar — covering the great majority of water reticulation and force-main duties encountered on Sarawak infrastructure projects.

PE100 also offers superior resistance to slow crack growth (SCG) and rapid crack propagation (RCP) compared to earlier polyethylene grades. This translates to a lower failure risk in service, reduced long-term maintenance costs, and the ability to use thinner pipe walls for the same pressure rating — making it both more economical and more practical for large diameter installations.

Full Diameter Range Now in Stock

Our Sibu HQ now holds buffer stock across the full PE100 range. Common project sizes in the 110mm–315mm range are stocked in greatest depth; the 355mm, 400mm and 450mm sizes are now available for the first time, responding to sustained demand from civil contractors on Sarawak's water supply trunk-main replacement and new town development projects.

Installation Guidance

HDPE pipe must be installed by personnel familiar with thermoplastic pipe systems. The following principles apply to all PE100 pipe supplied by HHL and should read in conjunction with the pipe manufacturer's technical datasheet and MS 1058.

• Butt fusion welding is required for joints in sizes 110mm and above. Equipment must be calibrated and operated by trained personnel per the manufacturer's welding parameters — pressure, temperature and heating time must be verified for each pipe wall thickness.
• Electrofusion couplers provide an alternative for all sizes and are recommended where butt-fusion equipment access is restricted, for example in confined excavations or when joining into existing networks.
• Compression fittings (push-fit or screw-type) are suitable for sizes up to 63mm in low-pressure non-critical applications only. Do not use compression fittings on PN16 systems above 63mm.
• Minimum burial cover for potable water mains is 600mm in non-trafficked areas and 900mm under roads, unless supplementary mechanical protection is provided.
• Account for thermal expansion in above-ground installations. Use expansion loops or anchored directional changes at manufacturer-specified intervals for the operating temperature range.
• Do not cold-bend pipe of 110mm nominal diameter or above. All bends must be formed using moulded fittings or fabricated butt-welded mitre bends.
• Store pipe horizontally on flat ground or purpose-built cradles, no more than 1.5m high, protected from direct sunlight for extended periods. Cap pipe ends during storage to prevent contamination.

• 110mm及以上管径须采用对接热熔连接，设备须经校准并由培训人员操作，每次焊接须按管壁厚度核实压力、温度及加热时间参数。
• 电熔接头适用于所有管径，在空间受限（如狭窄沟槽或接入现有管网）时优先推荐。
• 压缩接头仅适用于63mm以下非关键低压应用，PN16系统在63mm以上不可使用。
• 食水干管最小覆土深度：非交通区域600mm，道路下900mm，如有机械保护可另行考虑。
• 地上安装须考虑热膨胀，按制造商在操作温度范围内规定的间距设置伸缩弯或定向锚固。
• 110mm及以上公称直径不可现场冷弯。所有弯头须使用注塑管件或按对接焊接弯头。
• 管道须水平存放于平整场地或整合式支架，最高1.5米，存放时须避免长时间直接日晒，存储时封端管端防止污染。

Standard lead time for in-stock sizes is 1–3 working days for Sibu delivery; outstation scheduling is confirmed at the time of order.
